In addition to housing the Sobral de S. Miguel Parish Council, the João dos Santos House Museum also invites us to rediscover the daily life of a mountain village in inland Portugal until the mid-20th century, through a remarkable ethnographic collection now organized in a visitable space.
The space brings together pieces that already belonged to the parish and others donated by the population, now valued and contextualized to form an exhibition center that reflects the daily life and traditional knowledge of Sobral people.
Among the various objects, highlights include utensils related to the production and processing of linen, sewing machines, stoneware and crockery, pieces associated with breadmaking, the resin-working profession, beekeeping, herding, and various traditional trades such as muleteers, shoemakers, and blacksmiths. The collection also includes items linked to agricultural life, such as the corn threshing machine, a symbol of collective effort and community routines in rural areas.
Organized around local memories and experiences, this collection emphasizes the daily lives and ingenuity of the people of Sobral, preserving a tangible and intangible heritage that defines the community's identity.
Housed in the João dos Santos House Museum building—a space that once housed the former headquarters of the Parish Council and now represents the Sobral experience in multiple dimensions - this collection reinforces the museum's role as a guardian of memory, a place for sharing and valuing traditional know-how.
The way of life of that era belongs to the past, but the memory of that time helps us better understand who we are in the present and face the future with greater confidence.
