XJazz - Creative residency by Maria Vilanueva and Vânia Couto, with Sandra Pérez, Yoshida Carvalho and Lucas de Centi

Barroca
Together with the communities that keep the oral traditions of Beira Baixa alive, the artists will compile traditional Portuguese songs.

Artistic creation and community involvement, based on immersion in the region, are one of the characteristics of XJazz- Jazz Encounters in the Aldeias do Xisto.

In the 2019 edition, these elements mark their presence through the artistic residence of the Siu Kiu project, by Maria Villanueva and Vânia Couto, taking place in the Aldeia do Xisto of Barroca, from 23 July to 6 August. Maria and Vânia will be collecting in Galiza and Pinhal Interior and will also work on new themes to be recorded in Aldeias do Xisto, having as special guests the percussionist Sandra Pérez, the bass player Yoshida Carvalho and the vibraphonist Lucas de Centi. The public presentation of the work is scheduled for 4 August at 7pm at Casa Grande.

The collections of traditional Galician music will take place near the border with Portugal, in Ponteareas and Mondariz. They will be guided by Ilda Amoedo, manager of the Centro de Recuperación da Cultura Popular de Ponteareas, based in the Vila Sobroso castle.  The collection of traditional Portuguese music will be centred on the Aldeias do Xisto region, where the work of Leonor Narciso and the Adufeiras do Paúl is of special relevance.

Singer and instrumentalist, Vânia Couto works in the combination of world music and Portuguese Traditional Music, belonging to distinct projects, such as Pensão Flor, Macadame, Branta, Tabacaria, and Mil Folhas (with César Prata). Despite some influence in Jazz, she finds her home in the MPP, having also belonged to the GEFAC and to artistic and cultural projects with Casa Da Música, Clara Andermatt and Madalena Vitorino.

For her part, Maria Villanueva graduated in Classical Guitar at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Vigo. After her degree (in Santiago de Compostela), she went to Switzerland where she completed her Masters in Music Performance at the Hochschule der Künste Bern
She has collaborated on various projects, such as "Coro da Ra", "Dúo 2028", "Dúo Font/Villanueva". From 2016 to 2019 she lived in Lisbon, where she studied Jazz at the Escola Superior de Música.
