The Aldeia do Xisto of Gondramaz once again becomes a stage for music with another edition of XJazz – Encontros do Jazz nas Aldeias do Xisto, on August 22 and 23.
This year, at the invitation of the Municipality of Miranda do Corvo, the event takes on a new format: two consecutive days of programming that combine concerts with mediation and audience-engagement activities aimed at different publics. An initiative promoted by the municipality, in collaboration with JAC – Jazz ao Centro Clube.
Serões do Gondramaz kicks off on August 22 at 9:30 pm with a concert by renowned vibraphonist Jeffery Davis, who blends classical music and jazz, asserting a singular sound in which the vibraphone takes center stage. A true “sound sculptor,” Jeffery Davis officially presents the album ALLOY Vol. I – Standards at this performance.
The encounters continue on August 23 at 11:00 am with a Sound Walk guided by Luís Antero. A specialist in collecting and documenting Portugal’s acoustic heritage, he leads a sensorial journey through the village and its surrounding woodland. Advance registration is required, with a maximum of nine participants.
Later, at 6:00 pm, Luís Antero joins double bassist Miguel Calhaz for “Soundscape Jazz,” where soundscapes and jazz improvisation intersect to create unique, unrepeatable pieces that breathe new life into intangible heritage.
The program concludes at 9:30 pm with “Lírio-do-Vale,” the quartet formed by João Mortágua (saxophone), Andreia Santos, Miguel Calhaz, and Luísa Vieira. Founded in 2024, the project—rooted in a chamber jazz aesthetic—is inspired by the dialogue between humankind and nature, translating into music the contemplative beauty of the lily-of-the-valley, a symbol of harmony between life, the earth, and the sea.
Don’t miss the chance to experience vibrant names in jazz live and let yourself be carried away by their art. Also let yourself be embraced by the region and consider a longer stay. Suggestions and bookings at bookinxisto.com.
