Shrove Tuesday in the Aldeias do Xisto

Góis
The revellers travel through several villages and everything is allowed: humorous rhymes about the inhabitants, tormenting old ladies and flirting with young women.

In the Aldeias do Xisto (Schist Villages) of Góis, the Entrudo (Shrovetide festival) was a simple affair.Old clothes and objects were used to conceal the face. The most creative and ingenious people wore a mask made from cork, the brand image of the event that still takes place today. Re-established by Lousitânea, every year this tradition enlivens the streets of the Aldeia do Xisto of Aigra Nova  and neighbouring villages at Carnival time.

The initiative will take place on 23 February, from 8.30am. Aigra Nova is the starting point for the Shrove Tuesday Race, the Corrida do Entrudo, the highlight of the day. Along the way, they are allowed to do anything: recite humorous rhymes about the inhabitants, based on stories that have happened during the year, torment the old and seduce the young.

Throughout the afternoon, the schedule offers the usual activities, such as dancing, a Workshop on Making Cork Masks, the Stick Game and the Shrove Tuesday Parade. This year there is also the Queima do Entrudo, a new feature. This is a kind of scarecrow which will be set alight.
