Natural pigments have been with us since the dawn of human expression: they are memory, culture and a direct link to the land. Today, these ancestral practices can be revisited in a conscious, sustainable and artistic way. This is the proposal of the workshop ‘Tons da Serra da Lousã’ (Shades of the Lousã Mountains), which takes place in the Schist Village of Cerdeira, in the creative context of the Cerdeira School of Arts and Crafts.
Over three and a half days, participants will explore the chromatic potential of the Lousã Mountains, collecting local pigments and learning how to extract colour from rocks and earth. Under the guidance of Marta Rodrigues, each stage of the process will be experienced in a practical and guided way: from grinding the raw material to obtaining a fine powder; through the levitation technique, which allows the clay to be separated from other compounds; to the creation of a natural binder, which will give rise to the watercolours.
At the end, each participant will take home their own palette of mineral watercolours from the Serra da Lousã, as well as solid knowledge to develop a more natural and sustainable artistic practice.
