Lusitanian Agriculture 2015-18 Craft+Design+Identity at the Museu de Arte Popular

The exhibition brings craft+design’s contemporary pieces together for the first time in Lisbon, representing know-how, cultural identity and new ways of transforming spaces and connecting to the land.

Agricultura Lusitana 2015-18 Craft+Design+Identity is a project promoted by ADXTUR - Schist Villages Tourism Development Agency, from Aldeias do Xisto, with the creative guidance of designer João Nunes, involving around 150 people, including 22 craft workshops from all over the country and the students and teachers from nine design colleges, who authored the objects on display.

Among this extended exhibition at Museu de Arte Popular, new projects are also presented that combine knowledge, attract new actors and community mobilisation in the search for new ways of transforming spaces and connecting to the land.

As part of the programming of the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage, under the auspices of the European Year of Cultural Heritage celebration, the presentation of this exhibition must be understood in a broader perspective, as the result of a strategy to enhance rural heritage, in which preservation and innovation play equally vital roles.

The exhibition at the Museu de Arte Popular stands out for being the most extensive in the project's itinerancy route. It is developed by three thematic hubs, reflecting the process of approaching the territory as an inspiration and laboratory of creation.

A programme of activities with guided tours, workshops, events and talks, where the themes craft, design, cultural identity, and the development strategy of the Aldeias do Xisto network itself, will be triggers for the sharing of knowledge and experiences with visitors until December.

Agricultura Lusitana 2015-18 closes a trilogy that began with the Água Musa (2013) and L4Craft (2014) projects, whose theme is based on the relationship "Craft+Design+Identity", and which had the 27 Aldeias do Xisto as their laboratory.
